Document Summary

Humans and yeast - more base pairs in humans than yeast. One map unit in humans - 1% recombinant frequency is 1 million bp. In yeast - 1 map unit is very tiny compared (2500 bp) The 1 map unit in yeast is also equal to 1% recombination frequency. Human recombination happens in a larger chunk than in yeast. Same two genes are 1. 5mu away in a genetic map (mapping data), but -2. 4x10^ 6 bp in a physical map (based on sequence data). Clear landmarks defined distances between genes by localizing them on chromosomes. Numbers define a small chunk - that chunk is further broken down into even smaller units listed a-f. Ie sc in region 1a, and w in region 3b. This landmark - the salivary gland in drosophola - chromosomes divide but don"t segregate. Chromsomes pair together and form thick chromosomal bands. Used dye and incubate the chromsomes - you can see the band pattern shown here.
