They are built from a and b subunits. Alpha subunits bind to gtp and don"t hydrolyze frequently (pretty much bound to the microtubule), whereas beta subunits don"t have a high affinity for gtp so they can cycle through gtp and gdp (isn"t bound to the microtubule) There is a plus and minus end, you"ll find growth happening at the plus end and the minus end is slow growing. Maps - proteins that control assembly and disassembly of microtubules. Tau and eb1 promote growth and catastrophin promotes destabilization. There are also y-tubulins which are rings that attach at the minus end and act as a cap. Microtubules have a organizing center, mtoc, and in animal cells it"s the centrosome (located near the nucleus) The centrosome is made of two centrioles and a cloud of pericentriolar material and contains multiple y tubulin rings. The y tubulin rings are the place where the minus ends of the microtubules are nucleated (created/joint)
