BIOLOGY 2A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ovulation, Adrenal Medulla, Renal Physiology
Document Summary
The endocrine and nervous systems are the two long-distance communication systems. They are delivered in the blood stream and hormone actions have a slower onset but are longer-lasting than other forms of chemical communication. Humans have a closed circulatory system blood vessels, all vertebrates have a closed system and evolves from chordates. Some animals have open systems blood just flows free in the body cavity. Some animals have both will discuss later one. Endocrine systems evolved independently along with circulatory systems of animals, and therefore vary a great deal across groups (beyond sine fundamental principles) We will focus on endocrine systems in mammals and then consider some of the variation across vertebrates. Many hormones are involved in endocrine regulation. We will focus on general principles of endocrine systems and will leave much of our discussion of individual hormones until later in the course when we discus other physiological systems and how they are regulated.
