Document Summary

Transcripion of genes turned on to adapt from the glucose-lactose switch. Bacterial cells detect the glucose level and presence of lactose: as it transiion from glucose to lactose there is also an increase in the expressed beta-galactosidase and lactose permease proteins. These proteins are only expressed when they are required for the transport and metabolism of lactose. Beta-galactosidase and lactose permease proteins are produced when glucose is depleted and allows for efecive digesion of lactose. Operons: clusters of related genes with similar funcions (in prokaryotes), transcribes as one unit. Operon model: discovered by francois jacob and jacques monod, clusters controlled by an on-of switch that control the transcripion. This coordinaion is mediated by an operon: operon consists of (prog) Operator (on-of switch)- can be regulated to allow/inhibit transcripion. The rna polymerase can atach to the promoter if not inhibited and transcribe the genes in the operon, giving rise to one long (polycistronic) mrna.
