Document Summary

A form of asexual reproduction aka binary fission . Requires that identical genetic material is distributed amongst daughter cells. Initiated when the dna of the bacterial chromosome is attached by proteins to the inside of the plasma membrane. As chromosomes replicate, the cell begins to elongate and the newly synthesized dna is also anchored to the plasma membrane, they elongate until the two dna attachment sites are at opposite ends of the elongated cell. The bacterial cell begins to constrict in the middle, and a new cell membrane and cell wall is synthesized. Cell division reproducing specialized cells: for example, when muscle cells undergo injury . Allows a unicellular fertilized egg complex multicellular organism. Early embryos have stem cells- unspecialized cells that can reproduce indefinitely and are able to differentiate into specialized cells of one or more types. When an organism is fully grown, cell division can lead to continual renewal and repair of cells that make up various tissues.
