Document Summary

Theme 1: the structure of the cell - module 4: nucleic acid. Identify dna as the hereditary molecule in the cell: describe the structure of dna. Identify the location of genomes in the cell: describe the structure and function of rna. In prokaryotes the majority of dna is contained in the nucleoid. Also contain small circular dna called plasmids which contain one or two genes: ex. Plasmids can replicate independent of the core genome and can be transferred from cell to cell. What does the prokaryotic chromosome look like: eukaryotes: large and linear. Prokaryotes: small and circular: organelles such as mitochondria contain their own, smaller chromosomes, supercoiling : in addition to the coil of the helical dna structure; keeps them compact and preserved. Map of bacterial chromosomes: genome sequences have been used to map out the positions of all the genes on the prokaryotic chromosome.
