Document Summary

In situ studies: if we suspect that a specific gene plays an important role in the embryonic development of the fruit fly. The complementary probe to the mrna of interest would be a flourescently labelled short single-stranded segment of. The probe will bind/hybridize in a complementary fashion to the target mrna molecule in the organism. These types in situ hybridizations can be compared throughout different stages of development to understand temporal differences that may exist. Gene expression in many genes: in situ hybridization it"s useful to assess the gene expression levels of a few genes of interest. By using dna microarray techniques, it"s possible to examine the expression of thousands of genes at once: dna microarrays are largely based on base-pair interactions & binding of complementary strands of nucleic acids. This is an in vitro adaptation of the situ hybridization technique.
