Document Summary

Mutations create genetic variation some are harmful, beneficial, or do nothing. Genotype: genetic makeup of a cell or organism. Population with a gene pool has many different genotypes. Polymorphism: any genetic difference among individuals sufficiently common that it is likely to be present in a group of 50 randomly chosen individuals. Phenotype: observable characteristics or traits such as height, weight, eye colour. Maybe be visible or related to physiology: colour blindness and lactose intolerance are phenotype. Effect of a genotype depends on seeral factors. Alleles: different forms of a gene and they correspond to different dna sequences (polymorphism) Inherit allele of same type from each parent: homozygous. Inherit alleles of different types from parent: heterozygous. Betaglobin has a, s, and c alleles which result in a different amino acid. Two ss alleles = homozygous ss that results in sickle cell anemia. Heterozygous as is beneficial and protects against malari. Some genetic differences are major risk factors for disease.
