Document Summary

Cell turnover is a normal process in our bodies. Older differentiated cells die and need to be replaced through cell division of adult stem cells. Tissue homeostasis is when new cells are generated at the same rate at which cells are lost. A signal in the tissue will signal when cell death occurs. Stem cells then come in to maintain tissue homeostasis, some stem cells will remain as stem cells and some will differentiate into a specialized cell type. Tissue aging/degeneration: cells are dying faster than can be replaced. Homeostasis: no net change in cell number. Cancer: a population of cells excessively divide and far outweigh the number of cells that are dying (hyperplasia) Cells can divide a limited number of times. Stem cells are able to divide and create daughter cells an in nite number of times. The limited capacity for somatic cells to divide is known as the.
