Life as we know it, began approximately 4 billion years ago. Life on earth was almost exclusively unicellular for most of earth"s history and oxygen was virtually absent from the oceans and atmosphere. This was a very harsh and inhospitable environment. The appearance of the first photosynthetic cells, specifically creatures that could create oxygen, opened up the flood gates of diversity that has lead to the vast array of organisms we see today.
