Salicylate toxicity - interesting example of mixed acid-base disorders. Common analgesic (pain control), anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet (prevent cardiovascular disease- used in prevention of coronary artery disease) Acute toxicity may be intentional or not. Chronic toxicity - usually unintentional (if you use it for long periods of time) Uncouples oxidative metabolism: reduced atp, increased glycolysis, increased peripheral demand, fever and vomiting. Mixed acid base disorder: respiratory alkalosis and metabolic acidosis, both are primary disorders. Effects on intermediary metabolism increased glycolysis increasing fatty acid break down increase in ketones. Respiratory stimulation breathing harder lost more water from respiration, leading to electrolyte imbalance.
