As the aryan peoples moved across the peninsula, their institutions begin to crystallize. Fire sacrifices continued to be conducted by the priestly class. Kings would sponsor sacrifices (conducted by brahmans) which meant that priests grew to occupy great status among the population. Priests, warriors, merchants/agriculturalists, and serfs constituted the brahmanic caste system. Class was inherited and stringently enforced to the point where travel outside of the sub- continent would mean a loss of class as one invariably came into contact with all sorts of undesirables.
