Commissioned by paolo almerico (high official for two popes: country retreat for when he retires. Designed to take advantage of the views. Designed around a main central dome hall. Ground plan symmetrical layout , four entrances that look the same. Inspired by ancient greek architecture (specifically pantheon which is dedicated to all the gods) The pantheon has one portico as its entrance. Palladio replicated this using it at all four of its entrances: the four entrances are designed to face four cardinal points of the compass, depending on the time of day. Pediment the triangular shape or gable at the top of portico: smaller pediments over the windows on the main floor. Podium the foundation is raised: seen in ancient architecture, spec. temples. Sculptures that were made in the 16th century, made to look like ancient statues (1500)
