Document Summary

Anyone under the age of 18: method 1: Three main macroscopic methods do not need high tech equipment. Tooth development most closely correlated with chronological age: birth to ~ 21. Eruption of teeth into the mouth: under a little less genetic control. Teeth start forming form the crown (the top) The tooth forms down from the crown to the root. There is no change from around 21 to 35, meaning this method can only be used on subadults. Baby teeth fall out because the roots disintegrate and are pushed out by the permanent teeth which than grow in. Deciduous molars have wide roots, because there are teeth developing in the space under them. All of these patterns give us information to compare to known dental evidence from different ages. Teeth of females tend to calcify and erupt earlier: we only have one chart for males and females, but sex can"t be reliably estimate from subadult skeletons.
