ANTHROP 2U03 Lecture 8: Week 8
Document Summary
The main route of syphilis infection is via sexual transmission. Specifically, it is through transmission of bacteria across mucous membranes most common in sexual contact (including oral sex) However, bacteria may produce infection due to exposure through cuts or other lesions (including the use of contaminated drug paraphernalia) Syphilis infections are infectious only during the first stages of infection (~1 to 2 years) after which infections become dormant/non-infectious. Penis, cervix, vulva, mouth, throat or anus. Can lead to irreversible damage to cardiovascular, central nervous, or musculoskeletal system. Erupts 3 6 weeks after contact at site of inoculation. Highly infectious sheds t. pallidum continuously. Disappears 4 6 weeks later leaving no scar. Spirochetes multiply and spread via blood . Condyloma lata: highly contagious, painless, wart-like lesions in warm, moist sites (genitalia) Small, flat, red lesions, esp. on palms, soles, mucous membranes in mouth. Resolves after 6 months latent stage. Skin gummas painless but bon lesions deep, gnawing pain.
