Race in antiquity: egyptians, classified based on skin colour darker skin colour from north, yellow from egyptian, lighter from south, 1350, greeks, all non-greeks were barbarians you could adopt some cultural habits. Race and anthropology: social concept, not biological race, ethnicity, ancestry, interpreted affects political landscape, reinforce some groups and stigmatize other groups, no biologically distinct human groups cannot be biologically divided, concept of race persists, biomedicine, forensic anthropology. Race is not an accurate or productive way to describe human biological variation (edgar and hunley, 2009:2) Race, place, and face: classification of the natural world, 17th-18th cent, human biology tied to geography boundaries, exploring different continents at this time, encountered them, and provided snapshots of differences noticed by colonizers. Extended into what they look like and how they act, mortality, and iq. Extended into 20 century: european contact with far away populations, observable differences basis for classification.
