Document Summary

Cultures cultivate rituals to mark rites of passage which demonstrates values within culture and indicate a significant event is about to or has happened. Common transitions of the human experience are birth, and puberty, so naturally there are rituals which build on these themes (baptisms, bar matzahs", or wedding ceremonies). However, arguably the most significant rite of passage regardless of age, gender, or culture, is the last transition and the great equalizer; death. Furthermore, the observances and rituals incorporated directly reflect the value placed by a culture on life itself. The gardner"s were traditional, comprised of a father who was the provider and mother who was the nurturer. My immediate family is scattered across north america; my parents and i had the closest relationship and proximity with my grandparents. Accepted as a son, my father scheduled vacations semi-annually to assist my grandparents at their holdings, with emphasis on winterization.
