Anthony wallace: all religions begin as revitalization movements deliberate organized conscious effort by some members of society to create a more satisfying culture. Characteristics: period of increased stress or dissatisfaction within a culture, emergence of a charismatic leader, revitalization of old ways, teaching, beliefs, myths, songs, images, etc. This leads to the suggestion of re older myths and other traditional practices. Then they want to combine these with new beliefs. Jewish people- religious persecution at hands of roman colonizers. In haiti, a fusion of catholicism and their spiritual traditions. It can be seen as theft or as a misappropriation: when peoples culture is misunderstood or inappropriately represented, the objects get decontextualized, when the meanings get changed, when a dominant or powerful culture, appropriate from a marginalized community. Inukshuk: this image has been appropriated several times in canadian culture, they made this a symbol for the 2010 olympics, the inukshuk is an inuit image, they function as territorial markers.
