ANTHROP 1AB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Candelabra, Carl Linnaeus, Genetic Distance
Document Summary
Race as a biological construct guest lecturer. Dr. anna duggan about why race is problematic. Can get trickier though when you add in more options. Human heart, femur > cannot put a label based on ancestry on it. As humans we want to sort and categorize things. 18th c swedish scientist and examined different species of plants and animals to categorize them. Made categories based on something morphological or geographical. Human species has four sub-types > broke down geographically and some morphological things (i. e. hair, skin colour) Around 20th c genetics got involved but there were 4 different hypothesis of how humans were formed. 20th c favoured model called carleton coon. Model developed in response to apparent regional continuity in fossil record. Unlike candelabra, suggests there was a genetic exchange between regions of the globe. Migration between regions > gene flow allowed to occur between regions of the globe. Didn"t happen in multiple locations, only in africa and then spread.
