Anthro 1aa3: food sex and death- lecture 9: origins & evolution of genus. Intermediary species between ape like forms and humans. All had relatively small brains (size of a chimp or a bit bigger) Eyebrow ridge to support large facial and neck muscles. Bony protrusion on the top of the head like a mohawk in bone to support enormous neck and head muscles. Stocky body type- like short football players upper muscle development so big that it looks like they don"t have a neck. Muscular neck - much more similar to a gorilla than the average human. Overall more muscular than gracile forms. Less jut out face - less progranthic. Smaller teeth more human like dentition. They were the first hominid to use stone tools. Rel. larger brain 1000cm3 (humans 1300-1400) Still only found in africa- eastern and southern. Build up of different layers of occupation- different strata built up on top of one another.
