One of the most rapidly growing areas of research in anthropology. Closely to linked to other subfields (especially biological anthropology) The study of human health and disease, health care systems, and biocultural adaptation. Highly interdisciplinary, linking anthropology to: sociology, geography, economics, medicine, nursing, public health. Cross-cultural study of health & health care systems. Has been a focus of research since the early days of anthropology. Term first came into use in the 1960"s: early use of the term was ethnocentric. A health system encompasses: perceptions & classifications of health problems, prevention measures, diagnosis, healing (magical, religious, scientific, healing substances, healers. Western labels often don"t correspond to the labels in other cultures. Stories convey messages about how to: prevent health problems, avoid bodily harm, relieve afflictions, deal with old age.
