Study of language from a cross-cultural perspective ! Operate on the principle that language re ects cultural values! We can learn a lot about past cultures about studying their languages! Structural linguistics- study how language works, looks at it on a line by line, word by word level! Ex. may do cross-cultural comparisons (why in french we get masculine and feminine words that does not occur in other languages) ! They look at how different kinds of cultural identities affect how we talk etc! Ex. class background, sec may have impact on your accent, as well as word choice, vocabulary used (ie. elite schools in us can have an upper class accent) ! Historical linguistics- questions like what"s the origin of particular languages! Some study ancient texts, what"s the origins of written languages, others may study how languages change overtime ! Some look at changes in vocabulary (ie. googling wasn"t a verb 50 years ago) !
