Food: the item and its meaning: symbolic cultural perspective. Consumption: the process of eating: mouth (1 minute), esophagus (4-8 seconds) etc. Mc = anything made or modified by humans. Everybody eats - regardless of what culture. What and how we eat can become an expression of our ideas and beliefs. A single food can have many meanings: guilt, emotion, pleasure, memory, political, ethical. Cup of coffee - a first meeting home cooked meal by candlelight - a romantic evening. Sunday brunch/dim sum - close friends or family members. Lunch at tim hortons - casual get together. Example - match the eating context with the social meaning. People tend to classify foods in different ways, according to their culture. Food can be: edible- inedible, hot- cold, male-female, wet-dry. Example: hot and cold classification of foods in puerto rico. Fresco (cool) foods: barley water, bottled milk, chicken, fruits.
