Gender refers to the roles that people perform in their households and communities and the values that people have regarding men & women . The behavioural, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex - so issue of cultural tradition. The state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones) . Gender is the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and femininity . The roles people are expected to play because of their sex. We traditionally perceive there to be two genders: male and female. Binary: relating to, composed of, or involving two things (familiar but simplified/flawed dualities) Spectrum/spectra: used to classify something, or suggest that it can be classified, in terms of its position on a scale between two extreme or opposite points . Things aren"t as simple as black and white. Case study: the case of herculine barbin - a c19th hermaphrodite.
