SWRK 525 – Critical Thought and Ethics in Social Work
12 February 2018
Indigenous Research – Professor Gabriel.
A lot of current research looks at pathologizing Indigenous people – “what’s wrong with them”
Aboriginal Healing Foundation: www.ahf.ca
omandate of 10 years with $350 million nationwide
ohealing process of 10 years
oWanda was part of the team throughout the entire process
oHealing projects had to deal with physical of sexual abuse – writing proposals
Wanda as a Community Support Advisor
oGoing into organization with team: does this organization have capacities (physical, financial, etc.)
to run a healing centre?
6 centres founded across Canada
oDoing impact evaluation: how did healing centres impact community members, service providers,
family members?
Didn’t ask individual-centered questions but community-focused ones
oBuilding sustainable healing processes within the community as well for long-term
oProject was community-driven, a lot of discussing where community felt their needs were at (and
not where the foundation felt the community’s needs were at)
Approaches to evaluation, slide on myCourses.
oExperimental: research design
oGoal-oriented: goals, objectives of centres
oDecision-focused: decision-making with who (community, government, individuals, etc.)?
oUser-oriented: information users
oResponsive: what were healers, service users seeing in terms of the centres?
Principles of OCAP:
oEstablish standards how First Nations data is collected
oOwnership, Control, Access, Possession
Indigenous groups own and control how their information gathered during research is
used
oNotion of decolonizing research: rejection of Western theory knowledge
oOCAP as way to operationalize, consider what’s happened in the past to Indigenous groups and to
take that into consideration for the future so that the past doesn’t happen again
Model of self-determination:
oDecolonization as a huge part of leading to self-determination, healing, mobilization,
transformation (bringing together the different communities)
(transitioning to talking about Research and Ethics of Practice from a more Western perspective; Profs Gabriel and
Maurer reason that implications of starting with the Western perspective might give the impression that Western is
the standard and that the Indigenous perspective or mode of research would be the “other”, not taken as seriously or
given as much weight)
Research and Ethics of Practice – Professor Maurer.
Ethical considerations of applying research:
oParticipatory action research: conducting research with rather than about specific communities and
their members
