SWRK 400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Central European University, Refugee Children, Statelessness
Document Summary
This course introduces social work concepts regarding the specific needs and issues facing refugee clients. Students will develop skills in providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Because this population is always changing and becoming more diverse, we will focus on developing cultural competency knowledge, skills, and values. We will explore the various contexts for the refugee populations with whom students are working. The first part of the course provides a macro perspective on immigration. Immigration trends and policies are discussed as they influence the lives of immigrants and service delivery, and as a source of professional ethical dilemmas. The second part focuses on experiences and issues common to most refugees, including the multiple and complex adjustments associated with movement from one culture to another and the process of acculturation. The course will examine refugee-generating conflicts and subsequent international responses. Canadian refugee policy, history, and the evolving response to refugees.
