Social facts should be regarded as things but at the same time, you cannot break down those things into individual consciousness. E. g. , secularization, modernization, and industrialization are social facts. But if we are trying to understand these, we are not going to look at an individual process. They exert some kind of pressure onto individuals. He displays this idea through an analogy just like how biology of living cells cannot be explain by the chemical composition of the cells, we cannot explain social facts by breaking them down. We have to treat them as external and look at the forces they have on individuals. Both are important (2) cause (origin) vs. function (utility)
