Outline: methods, description and discussion of suicide (and the book, idea of normality (last section of his book rules of sociological methods) methods. Durkheim makes 3 claims: treat social facts as things. He is trying to say that society is external to us. He is against the idea of psychologist or methodological individualist people who say that individuals make up the world. Durkheim is saying that we are born into one particular world, culture and that influence us in terms of our sensations and feelings. It is external to us, it is deep inside us, we struggle with it people struggle to escape their background because it is so powerful. Durkheim refers to himself as a social realist or social holist. He says that social life has emergent properties: difference between a group of individual (marx"s peasants separate from each other) The moment when you get genuine social interaction which produces something new.
