Cultural paradigms became a point of focus as nics emerged. People began to look to cultural factors to explain diferences in development trajectory. Protestanism in america: calvinism says that it"s pre-determined whether you will go to heaven or hell. This makes people try to live morally and successfully (including in material terms) because that"s seen as a sign that you will be saved. Culture: a set of norms and values which determine certain behaviours and aitudes of individuals (max weber). Two disinct cultural views: evoluionist posiion: tradiional vs. modern, relaivist posiion: no culture is superior to any other. Cultural relaivism by elites: cultural relaivism as a tool of legiimising power dominance of elites and autocraic regimes: strong fears of cultural homogenisaion by globalisaion, preservaion of tradiions, resistance against human rights claims. Individuals must put state rights before their own . Argument that democracy is a luxury to be had ater economic and social success is achieved.
