After wwii, us farmers concentrate in one crop and overproduced. Used to set up a food aid regime and subsidize industrial wage bills with cheap food. Food aid helped order the world, contain communism, and promote development. Under terms of gatt, it defined ag development project framework. In 1953, it was agrarian with 47% of gnp from ag and 8% manufacturing. By 1981, it was 16% ag and 30% manufacturing. Had triple alliance of state, domestic capital, and foreign capital. Became a high income nation in one generation. Heavy and chemical industries went from 23% to 42% Selectivity allowed them to focus on some sectors. Selectivity paradox is that not all nations were able to develop with us food aid.
