Document Summary

Structuralist perpective, it"s a social construct doesn"t actually mean anything. Other cultures don"t really say it as much as we do- they use translations of like and adore. Plato: highest expression of human virtue but not linked to marriage. Women considered unworthy of love, heterosexual love downplayed: in ancient rome- more oriented toward heterosexual but still not marriage, courtly love- male chivalry and idealization of women. Notion of love as mutual: focus of love on marriage only comes about with the rise of capitalism. Romantic love more important in individualistic societies rather than collectivist societies: where focus on group culture, it"s a component but not all. Need intimacy, passion, decision/commitment (decision that you love someint and decision to hold on to it in the longterm) Passion is quickest to develop and then tapers to a stable level. Commitment comes more slowly but is essential. Consummate love: have all, what ppl look for in romantic relationships.
