Harriet martineau (1802-1876): often considered the first female sociologist o. Studied a number of things, especially gender inequality. Popular views: sex and gender are used interchangeably, synonyms. Sex: biological differences between females and males o o. Gender: social differences between females and males o. Physiology: genitalia, physical size, adam"s apple, breasts, hip structure etc. Feelings, attitudes, desires and behaviours associated with the sexes. Suggests that gender guides and affects us in many ways. Almost everything has a gender component o o. Omnipresence: we don"t realize how many of our actions are gendered o o. Perceptions: whether you realize it or not, when you interact with people you look for. People look for gender characteristics to determine the sex of a person. Gender binary, sex and gender are overlapping categories.
