Experimental methods: social scientific method that comes closest to a controlled experiment o o o. Limits: the people in the experiments are not the same o. Still, with random placement and a large sample, we are fairly confident that any effect we measure is the result of their different treatments. Past studies: ask adults to play with toddlers for 30 minutes, tell some the babies are boys, some the babies are girls, don"t mention anything about the gender to others. After they have played with children, asked to describe the characteristics of the toddlers. Findings: these studies find that our perceptions of people are shaped by what we think sex is o o. When told the babies are boys, observers say they played rough, have characteristics associated with men. When told the babies are girls, observers say babies were caring, characteristics associated with women. Rare: quite rare in sociology because of three problems.
