As social context changes, so does what we look for in a family. Social context (norms, values, economic structures, public policies) shape families. Culturally rooted ideas of gender roles -> partner choices that lead to nuclear families. Davis: looked at ads about what men and women look in a partner. A very traditional view of what men and women should bring to marriage. Makes the formation of nuclear families more likely. Increasing tolerance for diversity and notion that marriage does not have to be between heterosexual partners. While tolerance is increasing in general, it is not universal. Still some countries where same sex marriage is not legal. Still some countries where being homosexual is punishable to either prison or death (13 countries in 2015) 38% = neither pets nor gay couples as family. 30% = pets as family but gay couples are not family. 21% = both pets and gay couples as family.
