How to measure anti-Semitism
Surveys – do you perceive it, have you had problems with it?
• They are objective
• Asking person how they perceive it – large, small problem?
o This is commonly asked
• One issue with this approach
o Question of perception vs. objection
o A lot of times we find that there is a misjudgement
o Interesting with the Jewish case, by many objective measures – they are mis-
read, and they do well with rising inter-marriage rates, education, wealth, etc.
• What’s goig o?
o Are people paranoid? Taking things out of control? Generalizing things?
Sense of others – always present
• In Weimer, Germany before WW2 – significant inter-marriage and the jews were doing
well
• There is always a fear of something negative going on or going to happen
Friendship circles – how many of your friends are Jews?
• How diverse are you
• This question can be posed to any group
• Generic questions used to measure integration, social distance
• Is the majority groups ready to accept you
• Are you ready to accept them
Sklare – wrote about this many years ago
• When Jews moved into Suburbia
• He claims that there was discomfort of Jewish people, and the reason was that they had
to play an ambassadorial character
o Ca’t e youself eause you feel you hae to e a aassado ad ake a
good impression, you are not just representing yourself but your country
