Answers will be written, to the point. Criminology is the area of sociology studying criminal behaviour. Definition of crime: behavior that is punishable by the criminal justice system. Most crimes are deviant behaviours - murder. Yet most deviants act are not crimes - swearing. And some crimes are not deviant - parking violation. Sociologists differ from detectives in that they don"t investigate the causes of a particular crime. They study patterns of crime and deviance, general causal determinants of crime and deviance. Explore characteristics of people who commit crime s. Age, race, sex, education, wealth etc: are those with higher education criminals? (looking for patterns, some crimes are caught more often than others e. g. , white collar corporate crime tends to be more hidden.
