Document Summary
Marx, durkheim, and weber are founding figures of sociology. In looking at them, we better understand the origins of sociology. We also better understand some of the subject matter and perspectives that dominate sociology. Today"s lecture will focus on perspectives in sociology. There isn"t one sociological perspective; there are many. Commonality is they all focus on social relations. We"ll focus on 4 broad perspectives/ theoretical traditions: functionalism, Biological view of society: views society as a coherent entity, as a living organism. Like other organisms, societies have organs that have functions allowing society to survive. Economy, politics, family, religion, education, etc. all have functions that allow the society to survive. Economy: get the most basic materials that people need to survive. Family: provides common norms and social relations that individuals need to survive. Consensus: see social consensus as needed for all of these social organs to work together effectively and allow society to survive.
