Goals of the day: review deci & ryan"s self-determination theory, describe sheldon and krieger"s (2007) longitudinal studies of motivation change among law students, discuss chapter 12 of deci"s book. In the second semester, all 8 of them took the mmpi (used in clinical settings to diagnose any psychopathology present) Sheldon and krieger"s description of the life of a lawyer. Surveys found that of all the careers, the one most associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, suicide, divorce, substance abuse, etc. is the law profession. Lawyers tend to rate their profession as something that isn"t providing a lot of satisfaction. People that are pursuing a law career are suffering. 70% of students in the law program seek out mental health services. Becoming a lawyer is a high-prestige profession. There may be too many lawyers and too many law schools but not enough jobs. A lot law school professors have been advocating for reforming the law school structure.
