Ultimatum: said he wouldn"t see any patients who were smokers. Asked him why he was doing it. He got fed up treating smoking related diseases, people who continue to smoke are obviously not interested in maintaining their health . His response: the ultimatum was successful, the reaction was positive even from the patients who smoke. In his practice 500 were smokers and only 3 left. 30 called in to say they wanted to quit. Didn"t look at the 467 that didn"t respond maybe they"re just laying low . Dr says: patients response shows that they want to quit but need pressure. He"s not encouraging intrinsic motivation and autonomy he"s focusing on extrinsic motivation. One patient agrees with this i don"t have any choice but to quit smoking . But we know research shows that controlled people aren"t good at following through on things. There are recommendations for what dr"s are supposed to do.
