John bowlby 1969 defined attachment as the lasting psychological connectedness between human beings . Evolutionary way of thinking that attachment was to ensure the survival of offspring. The degree of security experienced in interpersonal relationships. Secure attachment develops in the first year of life through consistent, sensitive, and responsive parenting from a stable caregiver. Mary ainsworth developed the gold standard measure of infant attachment: strange. Child attachment interview (target et al. , 2003) Macarthur story-stem battery (bretherton & oppenheirm, 2003) Strange situation procedure (usually done at ~12 months of age) The observations are classified into 4 categories of attachment: These categories can be put onto a continuum (disorganized category was the last added). Patterns of attachment are organized by infant"s expectations of their caregiver"s availability and responsiveness. Children develop models of themselves and the world based on the experiences with the caregiver. Expectation of their ability to manage distress and challenging situations (self- efficacy) View of self as worthy of support.
