Work by stopping the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic neuron. Increases the amount of serotonin in the synapse. Treatment used for depression, ocd, gad, sad, and social phobia. Excluding depression, there are not many studies looking at the use of these drugs in youth. Cognitive-behavioural approaches are usually recommended first, before medication. Medication does not cure anxiety, it suppresses the symptoms. If medication is stopped, there is often relapse. Adult literature: 60% of patients free of panic disorder while on an effective drug, but between 20-90% will relapse. Includes behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (cbt), cbt + family treatment. Strong negative emotions or tension, displayed as: Core components of effective interventions: reduce cognitive bias. Anxious children and adults often self-talk, this increases: Child learns to identify different thoughts and the behaviour that goes with those thoughts.
