Role of cognition in anxiety family factors. It is an etiological and maintenance model for specific phobia (mowrer, 1948). Recall that operant condition involves adding and removing positive and negative stimuli to change rates of behaviour. This is a powerful reinforce (negative reinforcement) Avoidant behaviour increases because it feels good. Note that not only does it increase the avoidant behaviour, it increases the idea that there was something to fear in the first place. Unwanted intrusive thoughts are normal (prudon and clark, 1993): 293 undergraduate students interviewed about intrusive thoughts. Running car off the road: 64% women, 56% men. Cutting off finger: 19% women, 16% men. Left stove on: 79% women, 66% men. Imagining strangers naked: 51% women, 80% men.
