Goals are internal representations of desired states. Motivation is what arouses organisms to act towards desired goal. Expectancy-value theories: both these factors influence the motivation that someone will have towards achieving a goal. Goal dimensions (that predict motivaton, success, and well-being) The idea of consciousness; that although goal pursuit seem like an explicit process there is some research that suggests much operates on an unconscious level. He argues that goals can be activated or triggered by environmental stimuli/cues. Reason why: because we have frequently and consistently chosen that goal in that situation in the past. Often, we pursue goals out of conscious awareness and without intent. There was a bit of resistance about this idea: one implication: we are automatons being cued to behave in certain ways and have little control. Bargh emphasizes that this framework is adaptive because it is not helpful to think about ones goal every time we have opportunity to pursue that goal.
