Infants need to stay in relatively close contact with their caregivers and require frequent attention. Ultimately more likely to survive, reproduce, and provide genes for future generations. Mental model of self in relation to significant others. Attachment models develop in infancy via interactions with caregivers. Proximity maintenance: child wants to remain close to caregiver. Secure base: in addition to providing care and nurturance, the caregiver also provides a secure base so that the infant has confidence to explore the environment and learn about the environment.
