PSYC 333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Fundamental Attribution Error, Dispositional Attribution, Final Analysis
Document Summary
When making attributions about people"s behavior, one of the main phenomena that we tend to understand people"s behaviors through are their dispositions. We discount the situation influences on their behavior. Theories about why other people do what they do, and why we do what we do. Notion of whether traits (honesty, intelligence, physical ability, trustworthiness) are fixed or malleable. The notion about whether traits are fixed or malleable should influence the extent to which we engage in the fundamental attribution error. Most of the work is in the domain of intelligence. Implicit beliefs about intelligence impact approach to challenging tasks: Intelligence malleable (increased through effort and persistence), then seek them out (dweck, 1999b; dweck, chiu, & hong, 1995; dweck & leggett, Incremental view: if you believe that intelligence is malleable (can be achieved over time), you should be more conducive to persisting in the face of challenge. Attributes can be acquired over time (intelligence, honesty, etc. ) through experience.
