Different people respond differently to stimuli (reflect different underlying personality) Variability of responses does not reflect randomness but distinct personal attributes during situations. People are consistent in their responses and thus, predictable. But specific response to specific situation quite stable. *inconsistency is not about individual but disagreement between experimenter and participant. *not all personality dimensions are relevant to all situations. *ex: john always does school work early and punctual but he is not conscientious due to his room is a mess and forget friends" birthdays (he is not inconsistently conscientious but just more dedicated in studies than social life) Conclusion #1: knowing past average behavior across different situations, we can predict future average behavior. #2: although people will have different means, all will show wide range of responses. #3: knowing past behavior, we can predict relative likelihood of particular type of response.
