Self-categorization theory and social identity theory posit that: Identity uctuates in the short term in function of the social context. Context a > identity a; context b > identity b, so on. This is featured in individuals who have integrated identities and feel free to express separate identities in various contexts. These theories are limited in that they don"t really answer any questions about identity. Puts immigrants into 1 of 4 quadrants: Assimilation = identi es strongly with new culture but not old one. Separation = identi es strongly with old, but not with new. Integration = identi es strongly with both old and new cultures. Marginalization = identi es strongly neither with old nor new cultures. People who nd themselves in the integration quadrant nd themselves with higher well-being (e. g. happiest, better health, etc. )
