There is a window of vulnerability in adolescence. 7: tied to peer culture: learn from and imitate the peers, wanting to be attractive to others. Many of these behaviors are pleasurable: e. g. enhancing one"s ability to cope with stressful situations, some represent thrill-seeking, which can be rewarding, but many of these behaviors are highly dangerous. Development of all these behaviors occurs gradually, not acquired all at once. Substance abuse of all kinds are predicted by some of the same factors: e. g. high conflict with parents, poor self-control, these behaviors might be function in part as coping mechanisms to manage a stressful life. Characteristics of those who use these substance: penchant for deviant behavior, low self-esteem, problematic family relationship. The larger social structure in which they occur: low ses, attitudes toward health (maybe developed from exposure to hardships and poor health, social class is strongly related to most cause of disease and death.
