Document Summary

Psyc311: lecture 10: conclusions of aphasia (transcortical), the supramarginal gyrus & apraxia, and. However, when we say the language region , this doesn"t mean these areas don"t exist in non-speaking primates. The idea is that these areas were taken over through evolution and used as the language system. These areas exist in the right hemisphere and are used for the same basic function, but they are not exactly the same. Massive damage due to a cerebral artery infarction to the peri-sylvian region of the left hemisphere will cause global aphasia. However, if you have the same damage in the right hemisphere, you would only show some mild language disorders. For example, special linguistic tests may reveal problems in understanding metaphors and complex linguistic relationships, but the patient would probably continue their life as if nothing happened as far as language is concerned.
