A fish doesn"t understand water it doesn"t know any alternative. We are unaware of our own culture because we are so immersed in it. Three frameworks of thought and values (historical trends that still persist: see what different themes exist and have existed in our culture, 1) romantic (~ 1800s) Human"s connection to nature vs rising above & standing out from nature. Deep feelings and emotions compel us to act. People as deep in emotion, thought, morality: 2) modern (enlightenment ~ 1700s, also 1950s) Personhood and relatedness: identifying with reasoning mind. People (including oneself) can be understood in terms of beliefs, attitudes, personality traits, life history. Cognitive therapy: 3) postmodern (recent decades) Pastiche : sampling bits & pieces from other sources and putting them together, often playfully. Andy warhol reflecting on pop culture and modification with colour. Elements of traditional architecture used as art. Pluralism, we are aware that some see things differently.
